The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (Central Bank of the Philippines) has been awarded the annual, prestigious "Bank Note of the Year Award 2022" by the International Bank Note Society.

19 banknotes were nominated for this award, 6 of which are 100% polymer. The winner and overwhelming favorite is the 1000-piso banknote issued by the Philippines on April 18, 2022.

The 1000-piso banknote was printed by Note Printing Australia (on Guardian™ by CCL Secure) and is the first issue in a new banknote series that will focus on fauna and flora in the Philippines. The Philippine eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi), the national bird of the Philippines, takes center stage on the obverse of the polymer 1000-peso banknote. Also known as the monkey-eating eagle or great Philippine eagle, it is a critically endangered species of eagle endemic to forests in the Philippines. The Philippine eagle is considered the largest of the extant eagles in the world in terms of length and wing surface. The reverse of the 1000-piso banknote is similar in design to its paper counterpart, featuring Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site), an outline map of the county and a South Sea pearl.

Additional details about this banknote can be found here:

Runner-up number one is Northern Ireland's (Ulster Bank) 50-pound banknote featuring flora, fauna and industry workers, issued on June 15, 2022. Read about the banknote here:

Runner-up number two is Scotland’s (Bank of Scotland) 100-pound note featuring Sir Walter Scott and Dr. Flora Murray, issued on May 9, 2022. Read about the banknote here:

Rounding out the top six are Algeria's 2000-dinar (featuring the Martyr's Memorial), Barbados' 50-dollar (featuring Errol Barrow, the country's first Prime Minister) and Egypt's 10-pound (featuring the Al-Fattah Al-Aleem Mosque in the New Administrative Capital) banknotes. All six continue the popular polymer trend in banknote printing and collector appeal, with the Algerian banknote being a hybrid (composite) banknote (the other five are 100% polymer). It is interesting to note that not one of the ten nominated paper banknotes placed in the top six.

All polymer nominees were first presented here in our polymer forum:
