The Bank of England has appointed Sarah John, the Bank's current Chief Cashier as its new Chief Operating Officer. Sarah has been Chief Cashier since June 2018 and also became Executive Director of Banking in May 2022.

Sarah will be replaced by the Executive Director for Payments, Victoria Cleland. Victoria was previously the Bank's Chief Cashier from 2014 to 2018. She will now combine the role of Chief Cashier with her current Executive Director responsibilities which include work on the future of payments both domestically and internationally.

This will be the first time that the position of Chief Cashier will be filled by the same person in two non-consecutive terms in the Bank's history since 1694.

Victoria Cleland's signature appears on the following UK banknotes:
- the 10-pound paper banknote first issued in 2000 (BNB B199).
- the 20-pound paper banknote first issued in 2007 (BNB B201).
- the 50-pound paper banknote first issued in 2011 (BNB B202).
- the 5- and 10-pound polymer banknotes first issued in 2016 and 2017 respectively (BNB B203-B204).

All of the above banknotes portray Queen Elizabeth II.

Sarah John's signature appears on the following UK banknotes:
- the 10-, 20- and 50-pound polymer banknotes first issued in 2017, 2020 and 2021 respectively, portraying Queen Elizabeth II (BNB B204-B206).
- the new 5-, 10-, 20- and 50-pound polymer banknotes, all issued in 2024, portraying King Charles III (BNB B207-B210).

So it seems quite likely that we'll be seeing Victoria Cleland's signature on future King Charles III banknotes.
