Scott McTominay scored the first goal of a 4-2 win on November 18, 2025 against Denmark. After the Danes failed to kick the ball far away from their own defensive zone, winger Ben Doak hit a high, looping pass into the penalty box, and McTominay flung himself into the air. His right-footed overhead kick made perfect contact with the ball, sending it past Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel and straight into the corner. McTominay's goal would prove decisive in what was a thrilling 4-2 win for the Scots, ensuring that Scotland will participate in the 2026 World Cup for the first time since 1998. McTominay plays for SSC Napoli as well as on Scotland's national football team.
That famous goal has now been commemorated on a limited-edition Bank of Scotland polymer £20 banknote.

Only 100 notes featuring this design have been produced and only 50 are available to the public. Working with Scottish illustrator Katie Smith and with Scott McTominay's permission, the Bank of Scotland created an overprint to celebrate the goal. Unlike other formal commemorative banknotes which are specifically produced using banknote inks and fully protected after the printing stage, this is a standard issue that has been printed and finished, onto which a standard ink overprint was later added. As a result, these are standard mid-run serial numbers (on banknotes dated 1st June 2019).
A charity auction will be held on June 26th, wherein the following 25 banknotes will be auctioned:
- 9 Scott McTominay £20 Bank of Scotland notes, unsigned (Lots 1-9).
- 15 Scott McTominay £20 Bank of Scotland notes, hand-signed by the player himself (Lots 10-24).
- 1 hand-signed banknote and the actual pair of shoes worn by McTominay himself during the match (Lot 25).
The exact serial numbers for each lot will be confirmed by the Bank on or before Friday, June 26th.

Note that in the auction lot descriptions, Lot 25 includes an image of the boots superimposed on the banknote. This is NOT an additional overprint.
As with all standard sales and with many other charity auctions, the auction house is charging 22.5% buyer's premium. For UK buyers, this buyer's premium will be subject to 20% VAT. There is no VAT on the hammer price.
Another 25 banknotes will be available to UK residents aged 18 and older in a lottery. One can register online or by mail and if lucky, will receive one of the banknotes from the prize drawing.
All proceeds received from both the auction and the prize drawing will be donated to Crisis, the Bank of Scotland's official partner charity, supporting its work to end homelessness in Scotland by 2040.
The remaining 50 banknotes are either being kept by the Bank of Scotland for its internal archives or being gifted to individuals such as McTominay himself and influencers who are helping with the marketing of the notes. Two notes will additionally be made available at two upcoming pop-up events.
